New feature in Google Docs - Page View!
By Art Gelwicks | June 6, 2008
I know as a geek I tend to get excited over geeky things, but this one’s pretty cool. Google Docs has (finally) implemented a page view on their documents. No more do you have to view your work at full screen width (and on a wide screen monitor that’s pretty big!)
Here’s the old view (click to enlarge):
and here’s the new (click to enlarge):

It’s a little change with a big impact. Just look under View in the menu bar.

Rationale for Educational Blogging - Yet another couple reasons to just do it.
By Art Gelwicks | May 21, 2008
Here’s some excellent insights into the benefits of student blogging. Perhaps the issue isn’t that there’s benefit from the mechanics but rather the term "blogging" has been attached to too many negatives over the years.

There are many skills and concepts that need to be addressed to effectively help teachers learn to use blogs throughout their curriculum to foster these new literacies. It is not just a matter of transferring classroom writing into digital spaces. Teachers need to address writing for a public audience, how to cite and link and why, how to use the comment tool in pedagogical ways, how to read web materials more efficiently as well as explore other ways to consider pedagogical uses of blogs. Blogging requires us to teach students to critically engage media. Students need instruction on how to become efficient navigators in these digital spaces where they will be obtaining a majority of their information.

Liliputing: MSI Wind to pack a 10 inch display and a $399 price tag

Liliputing: MSI Wind to pack a 10 inch display and a $399 price tag
If they’re able to deliver on this price point and package offering this could be the Asus killer we’ve been waiting for. A $399 price tag with a decent screen and 80 GB hard drive could seriously rock for students in the fall. I’ll be looking forward to seeing this firmed up over the summer.

I’m not the only one here…

If you have an announcement or information you would like to share with the CCS Staff (and this site is a great way to do it) just email it to me with “Please Post to Staff Center” in the subject and include the date of when you would like it posted. The more the merrier around here. I’ll even add some new categories so you can find all the posts for a particular area (such as elementary, secondary, tech tips, etc.)

“ICE” ( In Case Of Emergency) - shared by Doji Dove
By Art Gelwicks | March 11, 2008
This is true and such a great idea. I checked it on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki
“ICE” ( In Case Of Emergency).
We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.
If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn’t know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency?
Hence this “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) Campaign
The concept of “ICE” is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name “ICE” ( In Case Of Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn’t know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as “ICE.”
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
Let’s spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!
